It had all led to this and when things didn’t turn out as expected, The lessons my dad taught me proved even more valuable than I ever realized.

Most people have 2 parents, I got lucky with 3.  I had my mom, my grandma, and my grandpa who I called “Dad.” There was always someone there for me and I grew close with each of my parents, but especially so with my “Dad”. He always pushed me to get a college education and when I graduated high school, I couldn’t wait to go to college.

My “dad” grew up in Ireland, he did not get to pursue higher education, both of his parents died young and he and his siblings were orphans.  He had to quit school and help support his younger siblings and contribute to the household. After coming to the U.S., he went on to become a Realtor and had a successful career.  It was his greatest wish that I get a college degree so I would have more choices in life.  He always pushed and inspired me.  So, after high school, off to college I went.

I had always thought I wanted to be an Obstetrician. I worked multiple jobs to put myself through school but after three years I just wasn’t excited about it.  I was working and studying and feeling like I was going in the wrong direction.  By chance, I landed in an accounting class and everything clicked.    I went to school during the day, waitressed at night and studied in the in-betweens.  I took some semesters off to work and save money to pay tuition for the next year. It took 9 years to get my Bachelor’s degree in Business but I made it through.

On graduation day, my dad came to me with tears in his eyes and told me he was so proud and was often afraid I would give up as he watched me work so hard for so long. For me, I never doubted it because he taught me to finish what you started and I wanted my degree just as much as he wanted me to have it.

I went on to have my son, Troy, and after years in the industry, opened my own accounting firm. I enjoyed owning my own business. Troy became a permanent fixture in my business. As a single mom, we improvised. I made him a playroom in my office, gave him educational videos and games, and we were a team.

After 40+ years as a REALTOR®, my dad decided to retire. As a kid, I saw him work with clients and he taught me the importance of integrity and honor in whatever you do. I always listened to my dad.  He was my hero.  I spent the decade before he retired helping him in many technological aspects of his business and so he encouraged me to get my license and be able to take over his remaining clients. I never thought I’d do real estate full-time but it wasn’t long before I realized that I felt more passionate about real estate than I ever did about accounting.

Through all of it, I learned how to believe in myself and work hard.  I learned to embrace the moment and treat your clients with respect and honesty just like my dad taught me.

I love living in California and enjoy time with my husband, Ray, and my son. I’ve been a licensed REALTOR® since 2008 and my favorite part of my job is helping clients find their next home and achieve financial freedom.

Buying and selling a home is often stressful and a lot of times it can be a steppingstone. Whether you’re expanding for a growing family or downsizing for a smaller one, there’s always the opportunity to advance financially. I’ve spent over a decade as a tax accountant and know the ins and outs of real estate from spending a lifetime around it.  I can also help you with some of the financial aspects that go along with buying and owning real estate. I will do everything I can to help my clients and look for opportunities to help reach their goals. I care about your success now and always and that’s why I’ll still be around in the years to come as your lifelong REALTOR®.

Sincerely,

Valerie Pestana
